USCIS says it will publish revised editions of Form I-539 (Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status) and Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization) with an edition date of 09/15/26.
USCIS explains the updates are needed to align with a recently published final rule about fixed time periods of admission and extension procedures for certain nonimmigrant groups, including academic students, exchange visitors, and representatives of foreign information media.
Starting Sept. 15, 2026, USCIS will not accept older versions of these forms. USCIS also says there is no grace period, so people should plan to use the 09/15/26 editions if filing on or after that date.
USCIS is providing preview versions of the new forms and instructions. USCIS advises applicants not to file the 09/15/26 editions before Sept. 15, 2026.
