USCIS announced that it will publish a revised edition of Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, with an edition date of 09/18/26.
The agency says the new form was updated to align with the recently announced Public Charge Ground of Inadmissibility Final Rule. USCIS is also providing a preview version of the 09/18/26 form and its instructions.
USCIS emphasized that there is no grace period for the change. That means people should not file the 09/18/26 edition before Sept. 18, 2026, and older editions will stop being accepted once that date arrives.
According to USCIS, the 09/18/26 edition replaces the 01/20/25 edition. USCIS will accept the 01/20/25 edition only if it is postmarked or electronically submitted before Sept. 18, 2026, and it will reject that older edition if submitted on or after that date.
If you plan to file Form I-485, the key change is timing and the exact edition you use. USCIS says it will only accept the 09/18/26 edition if it is postmarked or electronically submitted on or after Sept. 18, 2026.
