Supreme Court keeps birthright citizenship: children born in the U.S. are citizens

The National Immigration Law Center (NILC) released a statement after the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision on birthright citizenship.

In NILC’s view, the ruling confirms that the Constitution’s 14th Amendment means every child born in the United States is a citizen. NILC also says the outcome brings relief, but that the close vote shows how vulnerable foundational rights can be.

NILC’s statement frames the decision as a response to efforts to change birthright citizenship. The group says the president will continue actions that it believes harm immigrant communities and constitutional protections.
