CA budget delays Medi-Cal dental cuts for some immigrants until July 1, 2027

California’s 2026–27 state budget was signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom after negotiations with legislative leaders, according to a coalition statement shared by Health Access California and partners.

The budget delays the most harmful Medi-Cal dental cuts aimed at people classified as having “unsatisfactory immigration status” (UIS). Instead of taking effect sooner, the dental cuts are pushed back by about 12 months to July 1, 2027.

Advocates say this means some people may be able to keep getting dental care and related services in the near term. They also note that while the delay reduces immediate harm, it does not fully remove the risk that cuts could return later.

The coalition also points to other coverage concerns that are not described as fully resolved by this budget change, including an “enrollment freeze” that they say continues to keep some undocumented Californians out of coverage.
